Turning Your Hobby into a Business Using Clubhouse

Clubhouse is a relatively new app that has changed how we interact online.  Focusing on voice sharing and conversation instead of video has given this app a unique perspective on sharing our stories, educating others, and even sharing ideas about starting your own business.  With Clubhouse, you can funnel your rooms (places for chat) and your profile to your social media page and your business, creating customers out of listeners.

I have been on Clubhouse for almost two years. I have connected with several engaging communities, such as science and technology, the music scene, starting a new business, advertising tools, and many other areas.  The topics are limitless, making it is easy for you to start your own room. Because it is a conversation and not a video, you won’t fear being on camera. You just share your knowledge. There are many hobbies that can turn into businesses. In this article we will outline the benefits of using Clubhouse to make that happen.

The Benefits of Using Clubhouse to Turn Your Hobby into a Business

Ease of Use

Clubhouse is easy to use.  Day or night, there are rooms where people talk and connect about their passions, expertise, or businesses.  To start a room yourself, just click on the “Start a Room” tab, which displays when you open the app, name your room, and start talking.  People come and go throughout the session, and you can shut down the room at any time.  If you see an active room that interests you, click on it, and you automatically join and hear people talking.

A button at the bottom of each room says, “Leave Quietly”. This button lets you leave the room.  Other functions include the Hand Raise if you would like to contribute, the Plus button lets you invite other users you may know to the room and the Scissor button. This newer function allows you to share a clip and promotes your business.  Have your audience click on the Scissor Button to share the clip with their entire social media audience.

You can also create your own groups.  For example, you may be interested in interior design like I am. You want to meet others with similar interests or share your knowledge. You can start a room on Clubhouse for those with similar interests.

Connection to Social Platforms

This is one of the best parts of Clubhouse!  Your profile can list your website and all of your social media accounts.  I recommend using hashtags in your profile so other users of Clubhouse can find your profile, invite you to room and groups, so ultimately, you will meet clients and network.  I have found many opportunities on Clubhouse by making connections and building incredible friendships, leading to me working with some fantastic self-starters and entrepreneurs. Your profile is your way of connecting with your social media and your website.

Building an Audience & Turning your Hobby into a Career Through Clubhouse

Talk about something relevant and exciting, like what your audience wants to learn more about. Make this your call to action and create exciting groups with headlines that draw in your audience. Show yourself to be an expert in your field. You may find an increase in job opportunities.

To build an audience, your topics have to be exciting.  Ask yourself what would you like to know more about?  You would be surprised how much knowledge you have about specific subjects. Find your niche and get on Clubhouse, start a room, and talk.  People want to listen.  Many people use this app while working from home and are continuously learning.  Use this to your advantage by sharing who you are, what you do, what you want to do, and educate.  Education is the gateway to helping them understand why you are the expert, how you can grow a following, and how to create genuine interest in your service or product. Help others understand how much more knowledge they can gain by visiting your website and social media pages.  Followers become customers!  There is a reason they are popping into your room and listening.

Drawbacks

There are limitations with sharing, and the calendar functions are difficult to navigate. You have to get an invitation to be allowed onto Clubhouse. This was a gimmick that Clubhouse initially used to get people excited about the app. Today getting permission causes frustration for many people who are excited about and just want to access the app.

Many rooms are filled with people trying to sell their programs or describing how you can make millions in a short time.  Beware of scammers, and go by the general rule that if it sounds too good to be true, it probably isn’t.

Expert tip:

If you do not know anyone on Clubhouse, search the hashtag “clubhouse” on Instagram to find people who have invitations available for the app.  You should never pay for an invitation.  You would be surprised how many invitations people have and are willing to share.  Every time they share an invitation, they end up with more, so never pay for those.

Clubhouse has changed my life for the better.  I have gained knowledge about marketing, start-up businesses, networking and selling tips, and even spent time listening to some incredible business owners from around the world.  Clubhouse is a global interface where you can show up as-is and be yourself.  You can attract and educate customers without the intimidation of being in front of a camera. It is genuinely a breath of fresh air in our camera-laden world.
