If you work in a brick and mortar business, then the chances are you have slight envy for those who work from home. The idea of being able to go to work in the comfort of your living room and not experiencing the stress of a commute during rush hour may seem significant, but there’s so much more to it. Working from home can bring about so many distractions, especially if you have little ones running around. 

So if you’re having issues staying focused while trying to get work done at home, no need to worry. This article will be packed with tips to help avoid any distractions, thus, resulting in a productive workday. 



Make a Routine

One of the most important things you can ever do to have a productive workweek at home is establishing a routine. Whether it’s working out before work or writing a journal, make sure you start your day by doing something that will keep your mind clear for the rest of the day. Waking up at least two hours before turning on your computer will also allow you to get any minor tasks out of your way so that you do not have any distractions.

By establishing a routine and staying consistent, you will be able to have a productive day, right in the comfort of your own home.

Plan Your Day

Take the time to plan out your day the night prior. By drafting a to-do list, you’ll be able to focus on the essential tasks of the day. Besides listing any work-related tasks, you can also list any jobs that require attention at home. Outlining your activities will allow you to prioritize your day correctly. If you do not have work requiring a dedication to your computer for a full eight hours, you can also tackle some of those personal tasks throughout your day.

Whether you want to keep it old school and use a planner or keep it digital and write out your tasks on your Google calendar, planning out your day will be sure to increase your productivity.

Act As Though You’re Going to The Office

It may be tempting to work in bed in your pajamas, but if you are new to the work from home lifestyle, then it is suggested that you work from your bedroom. Consider getting dressed as though you have to go to work; no, you do not have to wear corporate attire, but you definitely should avoid wearing sweatpants and pajamas

After you get dressed, you should pick a spot in your home, preferably away from television, and work from that spot. Consider this spot your office space, and decorate in a way that keeps you productive. In short, do not act as though you are at home.

Take Small Breaks

Breaks are essential, and we all need them no matter where we work. Working the full straight hours will take an enormous toll on you, so by taking multiple short breaks throughout the day, you’ll be able to increase productivity. Since you’ll be at home all day, you may feel some slight cabin fever from being cooped up all day. 

If you ever feel overwhelmed, feel free to take a quick five to ten-minute break. You can go for a brisk walk, whip up a quick meal, or watch a short YouTube video. The important thing here is to time your breaks and make the most out of them.

Leave Your House

Working from home can be a bit lonely sometimes, which can also be a distraction because it can be mentally draining to some people. It goes hand in hand with taking a short break; however, if you do not have time during the day to go outside, you can always step outside before or after work. Although this is not taking place during work hours, it will mentally prepare you for work the next day since staying cooped up in a house can be mentally challenging to some people. 

Leaving your house at intervals will allow you get some fresh air and let you socialize with other people, which is excellent for people who live alone and work from home.

Put on Some Music

Music is a great way to get you through your day and focus on your work. If you want to take it to a new level, consider buying some noise-canceling headphones and turn on your music. This act will allow you to cancel out any outside noise and help you focus on the many tasks you have at hand.

If you decide to go down this route, consider playing soft music, the more soothing melodies will help you focus more and keep your mind more at ease than more upbeat or loud songs.

Identify Your Distractions

The best way to avoid a distraction is by knowing what distracts you the most. If you are someone that loves being on social media and cannot seem to put your phone down, then consider shutting off your phone while you are working and turn it on during your break. Or if you are someone who loves watching TV, then it is highly recommended that you shut off your TV while working. 

If you find yourself getting distracted easily, take a moment to pinpoint what those distractions are, find a solution to those distractions and take the necessary action. You’d be surprised how much work you’ll be able to get done when you finally get rid of those small distractions.
