With the waves of technology being released every year from top manufacturing companies, it was expected that Google would at some point begin developing their own smartphones and devices that compete with other. Rumors and speculations about a Google smartphone on the way have always been there but now it seems like they will be confirmed.
Google is reported to be working on a new smartphone that will be able to complete head on with brands like Apple and Samsung according to The Telegraph and Mac Rumors. Motorola, one of Google’s many manufacturing partners has been involved in developing the smartphone hardware according to the rumors. If this is true, it will be exciting to witness the shift in the company’s ambitions.
Google has largely been involved in software development with their infamous Android OS, leaving device manufacturing to hardware companies like Samsung and Apple. The reports stated that Google’s internal handset division will take care of all the design, manufacturing and software development. Currently, Google’s Android OS is used by some 1.4 million devices around the globe. A self-owned smartphone will be a huge step for Google in a bid to capture the cell market.
However, it will not come without challenges; Google was already facing monopoly charges accusing it of using the Android OS to push their chrome browser and search engine on users. Moreover, much of Google’s mobile income comes through iOS networks and if Apple feels threatened, they have the ability to make things hard for Google.
What it means for users
For users, it is always an exciting moment when new devices and technologies hit the market. Google smartphone will definitely be a hit as the company is already a big dog in the market. It is purported that the release will be before the end of 2016 and Google is already talking with cell companies to arrange its release.
